Wellspring Skincare's Complete Guide to Botox (Pt.2)

Updated: Aug 13, 2023

Are you ready to take the plunge and get Botox for the first time? If so, we've got you covered! Once you understand how Botox works, you'll need to know more about its applications to prepare you for a consultation with your aesthetic injector.

Today, we'll discuss a few ways you can use Botox to smooth skin, plump the lips, and even increase hair growth. Let's get started!

The Most Popular Types of Botox Procedures

People often confuse Botox and filler, but these two injectables have different applications. Essentially, Botox works by paralyzing muscles and lasts about 3 to 6 months for most people. In contrast, dermal fillers work by adding volume to certain areas, such as the lips or cheeks.

Most people use a combination of Botox and filler to achieve their desired results. If you're not sure where to start or how many units of Botox you'll need, we'll guide you along the way.

Lip Flip

If you're hesitant about getting lip filler, a lip flip is another option to achieve fuller lips. During this procedure, a nurse injector will inject a few units of Botox at the edges of your lips and around the corners of your mouth. Once Botox begins to work its magic, the muscles around your upper lip will relax and lift upwards. Usually, a lip flip only requires 4 to 6 units of Botox for the best results.

Although the volumizing effects of a lip flip don't directly compare to that of lip filler, it's the ideal remedy for a gummy smile! If you prefer more volume, consider adding a syringe of lip filler to plump your freshly flipped pout.

Forehead Botox

Botox is one of the most popular and effective ways to smooth forehead wrinkles. Whether you're interested in softening lines that are already there or preventing lines from occurring, forehead Botox may be right for you. In most cases, injectors will treat your concerns with the following number of units in each area of the forehead:

  • Horizontal lines require 15 to 30 units of Botox.

  • Glabellar lines, also known as the "11" lines between the eyes, require 15 to 30 units of Botox.

  • Crow's feet require 10 to 12 units of Botox for each side.

Your results will last anywhere from 3 to 6 months, depending on how quickly your body metabolizes the Botox. The good news is that most people need less Botox over time since it gradually weakens the facial muscles.

Masseter Botox

Did you know that chronic stress and anxiety can show in your jaw? A 2020 study shows that stressed people have a 97% chance of developing bruxism, which is a condition that causes a person to clench their teeth and overuse the masseter muscle. You might suffer from headaches, dental issues, and a square, boxy jaw when this happens. Sometimes, people prefer to get a night guard from the dentist or TMJ massages that alleviate tension, but masseter Botox is a more permanent option.

During this procedure, your injector will inject anywhere from 25 to 50 units of Botox on each side of your jaw. Once the Botox kicks in, your chronic headaches should gradually fade away. Since the masseter muscle is relatively large, it may take about four weeks for the muscle to shrink and reveal a slim, contoured jawline.

Nose Botox

It may come as a surprise, but Botox can also give you the contoured nose of your dreams. Although nose Botox won't provide the same drastic results as a surgical nose job, it's a great way to make minor changes to your nose. Since the nose contains three separate muscles, your injector will place Botox in these areas to change the shape of your nose. Nose Botox can treat the following issues:

  • Bunny lines. Depending on your facial muscles, you may notice a horizontal line developing on the bridge of your nose. These are referred to as "bunny lines." Botox injectors treat bunny lines by injecting 4 to 8 units of Botox on the side of the nose.

  • Droopy nose tip. A droopy nose tip is caused by the depressor septi nasi muscle pulling the nose down from the lip. Your aesthetic injector can add 2 to 4 units of Botox beneath the septum for a fresh, lifted look.

  • Excessive nasal flare. If nasal flaring causes your nose to appear wider than you'd like, your aesthetic injector can place 4 to 20 units of Botox along the nostrils to prevent them from expanding.

As with other Botox procedures, your results will last anywhere from 4 to 6 months before it's time for a touch-up!

Neck Botox

Nowadays, almost everyone has a few lines on their neck, especially from scrolling on social media or slouching over a laptop. When your skincare routine isn't cutting it, you can always try a few Botox injections to soften your necklines.

Neck Botox from an experienced aesthetic injector will relax the muscles that pull your jaw down, which tightens the skin and slims the jawline. Your neck lines will require anywhere from 20 to 50 units of Botox, depending on the strength of your neck muscles.

Hyperhidrosis

Even though Botox is most famous for treating wrinkles, aesthetic injectors can also use it to treat health conditions. Excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis, can significantly impact your quality of life, but a few Botox injections can help remedy these issues.

In most cases, people with hyperhidrosis experience problematic sweating in one area of the body, such as the feet, underarms, or hands. Botox injections work against this issue by blocking the nerve signals responsible for producing sweat. Depending on the area, you may need anywhere from 50 to 100 units of Botox.

Hair Botox

Even if you've tried every hair oil and deep conditioner to remedy your hair loss, hair Botox may be just what you need for long, luscious locks. During this treatment, an aesthetic injector will inject a few units of Botox into the scalp to relax the muscles. Once the tension in the scalp is alleviated, blood flow to the scalp will increase, which allows more nutrients to travel to the hair follicle.

The end result is increased hair growth and thicker, longer hair. While the dosage varies from person to person, hair Botox generally requires 100 to 200 units of Botox. But remember that hair Botox only works in areas where the hair follicles are still functional, so it will not work if you have an area of the scalp with complete baldness.
