The Benefits of Microneedling with PRF

Updated: Aug 13, 2023

Once a treatment that was only familiar to a select few, microneedling with PRF has become a standard cosmetic treatment in the skincare world. Whether you struggle with advanced skin concerns or are simply interested in maintaining supple skin, microneedling with PRF can improve your beauty regime!

The results of microneedling with PRF are long-lasting and far outweigh that of basic facials. Today, we’ll teach you about the many benefits of microneedling with PRF and give you the most important information about this procedure so you’re well-prepared for your next appointment!

Microneedling vs. Microneedling with PRF: What’s the Difference?

Microneedling is one of the most popular and affordable treatments that you can get to rejuvenate your skin, but adding PRF to this treatment can supercharge your results and reduce your healing time. Let’s review the difference between these treatments so you’re well-prepared for your consultation with a skincare specialist!

What is Microneedling?

Also known as percutaneous collagen induction therapy, microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure during which a skincare professional rolls tiny, micro-sized needles across the skin to superficially injure the skin in a controlled manner. This superficial damage stimulates collagen production while healing acne scars and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

Although microneedling is quite effective as a standalone treatment, it may be combined with PRF and other procedures for even better results.

What is PRF?

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a stronger version of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and can be used to revive dull skin. During PRF treatment, your skincare specialist will draw blood and spin it using a centrifuge that separates blood from plasma. This process creates a concentrated fibrin solution that can be applied to the skin after microneedling.

The PRF will support your body’s growth factors for a quicker healing time, smoother skin, and reduced signs of aging.

The Benefits of Microneedling with PRF

Now that you know what microneedling with PRF is, we’re ready to discuss the benefits of the revolutionary procedure. If your regular skincare routine isn’t giving you the results you want, try microneedling with PRF to minimize acne scars, sun damage, wrinkles and more!

Microneedling with PRF Treats Acne Scars and Sun Damage

Acne scarring can be a major source of insecurity for some people. Indentations and bumpy texture from acne scarring can be difficult to treat, but microneedling with PRF can minimize the appearance of these scars.

The combination of microneedling and PRF will break apart collagen bundles on the superficial layers of the skin to trigger collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin. Furthermore, this process also reduces dark spots by dispersing clusters of melanin to reduce the appearance of sun damage. The end result is smoother, healthier skin!

Microneedling with PRF Can Shrink Pores and Reduce Discoloration

Aging reduces collagen production, which causes larger pores and uneven skin tone. Since microneedling with PRF stimulates collagen and elastin production, it will help minimize pores and discoloration. Over time, your skin will thicken and become tighter.

Microneedling with PRF Reduces Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Fine lines and wrinkles emerge as collagen production decreases over time. Collagen is a naturally occurring substance that plumps and smooths the skin, while elastin keeps your skin firm. One of the best benefits of microneedling with PRF is its ability to increase collagen production and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, giving your skin a youthful glow!

Are You a Candidate for Microneedling with PRF?

Microneedling with PRF is a versatile treatment that almost anyone can use. It is a suitable treatment for people who are in good health, regardless of their skin tone. However, people with eczema or rosacea may struggle with prolonged healing times if they undergo this treatment. In addition, people who scar easily or are prone to keloids are not the ideal candidates for this treatment.

During your consultation, a skincare specialist will assess your medical history to determine whether or not microneedling with PRF is right for you. If this treatment is the best option for you, they may recommend alternative treatment options so you can have a glowing, healthy complexion.

Preparing for Microneedling with PRF

As with most in-office treatments, you’ll need to prepare for microneedling with PRF. If you’re currently using retinoids, retinols, or chemical exfoliants in your skincare routine, discontinue use a week before your treatment.

In addition, you’ll need to avoid waxing or tweezing body hair on the areas that will be treated. Since your healthcare provider will need to draw blood for microneedling with PRF, you’ll also need to discontinue the following supplements before treatment:

  • Vitamin A and E

  • Gingko

  • Garlic

  • Flax

  • Cod Liver oil

  • Essential fatty acids

We also recommend drinking 64 ounces of water so that you’re well-hydrated when it’s time to draw your blood. And, of course, make sure you arrive at your appointment with clean, makeup-free skin! Now, we’ll discuss how to care for your skin after microneedling with PRF.

Microneedling with PRF Aftercare

After receiving microneedling with PRF, you may experience skin tightness and redness for the next 1 to 2 days. The total healing time takes about three days. Just make sure you follow these simple aftercare instructions until your skin is fully healed:

  • Drink 64 ounces of water a day for quick healing

  • Do not touch or rub your skin for 8 hours

  • Do not apply makeup or sunscreen for 12 hours after treatment

  • Use a gentle cleanser after treatment

Regarding skincare, you’ll need to stick to a gentle regime for 72 hours. You may use a hyaluronic acid serum, a moisturizer, and an occlusive balm like Vaseline or Aquaphor. Once your skin is healed, you may return to your regular skincare routine and enjoy your smooth, glowing skin!
